Fiberglass layers layout, the Standard of BBQ Donut Boat Manufacturing Process
A.It’s the gel coat which colors the outer layer of the whole panel with high-gloss, meanwhile it protects the BBQ donut boat from water and ultraviolet radiation.
B.2 layers of M300 chopped fiberglass mat.
These 2 layers support the gel coat gloss softly and delicately.
C.4 layers of WR900 woven fiberglass combo mat. Each layer contains one layer of fiberglass fabric and one layer of chopped fiberglass mat.
The UP resin, supplied by INEOS, is used as default for the new BBQ donut boat. If you want the resin with higher standard like VE or EP, that’s absolutely available! Because we are using vacuum resin infusion process to build the new BBQ donut boats, which almost covers various types of resins globally.
Note, if it’s the EP resin, we need to change the fiberglass material to match with it, for example the carbon fiber mat and fabric. So the prices could be different, A LOT!

The Gel coat Spray Gun is Extremely Important to the BBQ Donut Boat Quality

The worker was spraying gray gel coat on the old BBQ donut boat deck molds. Here we are not talking about the spray tricks, it’s the spray gun itself. We call this the Shiahu Gun in China which means the spray gun with its pressure cup at bottom, actually it’s siphon feed spray gun.
The gel coat viscosity ranges from 0.8 to 1.3 at 77℉, 25℃. It’s stickier than honey. How can he spray it out with a 3.5mm nozzle?
Our workers once used lots of siphon feed spray guns in the past, such as W77, 2.5mm Japan Anest Iwata, W77, 3.0 Taiwan Prona, even W77, 4.0 Jiangsu Heike.
Without acetone diluted, none of them can spray out the gel coat successfully. But with the acetone mixed with the gel coat, the BBQ donut boat outer layer will be very soft and there will be thousands of tiny air holes in the surface of the BBQ boat. You can barely tell the difference from the outside unless you use a magnifier.
In addition, the acetone lowers the gel coat viscosity which breaks the solid bonding with the inner resin and fiberglass mat. But on the manufacturer side, they can save some costs with the acetone.
Theoretically, as the acetone evaporates, the viscosity of the gel coat will recover a little bit, but it will never get back to the original factory viscosity.
Plus, in the old model of the BBQ donut boat production, the workers must manually apply the first 2 layers of FRP mat before the gel coat gets all cured. So in reality, the acetone never evaporates completely.
“So what is the big deal? Just small holes and low viscosity.”
Yeah, when thousands of small holes at the BBQ donut boat bottom, the water could seep inside very slowly and silently, the whole process could last for 2~5 years until you feel the boat is getting heavier and heavier lately.
Experiment: when high-strength epoxy resin meets acetone

For sure, if your budget is limited and you still want to try the older BBQ donut boat from China, please force the factory to use the cup gun GX1000, 5.4mm nozzle, it’s absolutely affordable. And tell them do not use acetone!!! And ask for the full videos records for your boats manufacture process, otherwise, they won’t follow your orders.
Another best solution is the U.S. Graco gel coat system which is quite expensive but the BBQ boat surface will be extremely hard, smooth and glossy and without any air holes. It doesn’t need acetone at all!
